Hula Girl Birthday Cookies and Hawaiian Flower Cupcakes

These cookies turned out ridiculously cute! I created my own cookie cutter this time by bending a gingerbread woman cutter to my liking. The cookies got a coat of glaze, then I piped on the skin tone icing, filling in the belly and face with a thinned version of the same icing. I also piped on the green hula skirts and added hair and a coconut bra. Each dancer got a flower in her hair and a sweet face with edible markers. Then I wrapped up each cookie in a cellophane bag with a little ribbon and a tag for handing out as favors for a birthday party at a hula dance studio. The party guests also enjoyed some black and white cupcakes with lime green buttercream icing and a bright fondant hawaiian flower on top.

Fisher Price Jungle Animal Baby Shower Cupcakes

Then we created fondant circle toppers featuring the palm trees, giraffes, monkeys and cheetahs from the Fisher Price line of baby shower supplies. Noah's Ark First Birthday Cake

This Noah's Ark cake was for a special cousin of mine on his first birthday. The cake was carved from a vanilla sheet cake and stacked with layers of homemade strawberry buttercream icing. Both tiers of the cake were covered with brown fondant textured to look like wood planks. Windows were added to the sides of the boat, then I added pairs of animals to each of the open windows, the deck and the roof. All animals were hand molded from fondant with some details drawn in with edible marker. Lastly I piped on the message to the birthday boy and added waves surrounding the cake with blue cream cheese icing, textured with a spatula to create "water".

Poinsettia Cookie Pop Bouquets

Christmas cookie bouquets were six poinsettia shaped cookies on sticks, hand decorated with icing glaze, sugar, edible glitter and melted chocolate. Each cookie pop was individually wrapped and tied with a bow. The cookie pops were displayed in a recycled baby formula container wrapped in holiday paper and a fun bow. The container was filled with sand and rocks (to weight it down) and topped with a circle of styrofoam (to hold the cookies in place) and green shredded paper. These were made for my daughter's teachers' gifts from her class (gift cards were also added and stuck in with the cookies).

Sea weed was piped with icing and molded chocolate shells, sand dollars and star fish were added to the bottom. "2" topper was molded from chocolate and added to the top with greenery and chocolate shells.

Pink Peony Engagement Cake

This sweet and simple cake was for an engagement party. The bride chose shades of pink for her wedding (makes me think of "blush" and "bashful" from Steel Magnolias!) and selected the wedding date according to when peonies are in bloom. So I created this 2 tier chocolate chocolate chip cake covered in pale pink fondant with a pearl shimmer. Then I added the bright pink peony as the star of the cake. I started with a gum paste center that I covered with smaller petals. Then I cut each larger petal out of gum paste, rolling them thin and curling each one. I wired each large petal and pulled them all together with floral tape to create one large, semi-open bloom. It took over 20 petals in all, and I brushed each one with a darker pink petal dust to give the flower some depth. I placed the bloom on the lower tier and to the side of the cake to add some interest. Then to keep the cake clean and sleek, I wrote "congratulations" to the happy couple by piping onto the cake board. The peony was a labor of love - these flowers are spectacular in person and a lot of work in sugar. But SO worth it. [Side-note to self: Who knew that even my love of flowers would be nurtured in this career path? I am so lucky to love my job!]

Jet Ski Cake 50th Birthday

This cake was a fun experiment in "not quite 3D". I decided to do a different technique here by covering the cake with fondant, then spreading icing on top to create the water effect. Then I molded the jet skiier out of fondant, using a push mold for the body parts and hand molding the jet ski myself. I added the clothes in fondant, made the jet ski handle and the skier's right side kind of pop out of the cake. Then I added details (hair, cool guy glasses, tattoo armband, jet ski markings) with edible paints, markers and luster dusts so that the skiier resembled the birthday boy. The background hills I cut out of fondant and brushed on some color to resemble a scene at the river. Then I piped blue icing waves around the edges, added some white wave designs for interest, and added buoys to the corners to drive home the 50th theme. The cake was vanilla with strawberry filling and was a giant hit with the guests. From the photos I saw, it looked like a great party!

Martini Birthday Cake

So with the weather so hot lately, I guess we're all looking for a summer cocktail. This cake was inspired by a fan of the Stoli Blueberry Martini. I made a fun, girly cake by covering a red velvet cake with fondant zebra stripes and adding a blue ribbon border and bow. I topped the cake with a fondant cocktail size napkin which became the perfect coaster for the martini on top. For the drink, I again used a plastic martini glass and filled it with pineapple cake. Then I actually poured a little Malibu rum over the cake and topped with frosting (rum cake, right?) So I guess it was more like a pina colada in a blueberry colored glass. Still tasty though. For a pop of color, I added the rolled roses in hot pink and tucked in a couple of rhinestone picks for a little bling. The finishing touch was the fondant olive on a drink stirrer for the top of the cocktail.

Margarita Hawaiian Cake

If the "Margarita Man" had a "rent-to-own" program, my cousins would be giving those babies out at Christmas by now. So it is only fitting that they get my first cake featuring the favorite family drink. This particular cake was for my cousin Genell on her 21st birthday. She was looking forward to joining us for margaritas this time, since she had never, ever tasted alcohol before this party. So I merged the margarita with the Hawaiian party theme and this was my result.

The bottom tier of the cake was cookies & cream cake with cookies & cream filling (a cousin favorite). The top layer was my (what else?) margarita cake with a lime scented buttercream filling. I covered the whole cake with hot pink fondant and wrapped the top tier with brown fondant that I molded and painted to resemble bamboo. On the bottom tier, I piped white hibiscus flowers with white buttercream and brushed the icing to create an embroidery effect. Then I spun a rich, emerald color liquid sugar into a margarita glass and .... JUST KIDDING! It's a plastic glass from the party store. (It's a spatula, not a magic wand!) I filled the glass with more margarita cake, piped on icing, and added a fondant wedge of lime and a real straw. I finished the cake with a few gum paste and fondant flowers (orchids, stephanotis and plumeria).

I have done a few first birthday cakes where the top tier of the cake was a large cupcake that you can remove and give to the birthday boy/girl as a "smash" cake. I decided this one is the adult version of that cake (where the smash cake gets you smashed! ha). My cousin got to take the glass off the cake and walk around the party with her own personal 21-year-old cupcake. Fun! Let the drink-cakes begin!

This cake was for a beautiful wedding on the golf course of the Mission Viejo Country Club. The square, 3 tiered cake consisted of layers of yellow spice cake, cookies & cream cake, and vanilla cake with strawberry filling. The tiers were covered with white fondant and stacked; then I added a band of black fondant that I embossed with a scroll design to add some texture. Once the cake was all set up at the venue, I added fresh flowers (hydrangea, cymbidium orchids, lemon blossoms, stephanotis and mini calla lilies in shades of green and white), which gave the cake the pop of color that really made it shine. The room looked gorgeous - the centerpieces were so striking with all different green flowers and even a variegated kale that made such interesting arrangements. It was very elegant and I was so glad to be a part of this wonderful family's special event. Best wishes!

Black and White Wedding Cake

Simple and elegant - my favorite kind of wedding. And this cake was a perfect match for that theme. I created this 4 tier cake with layers of white cake and raspberry filling. The tiers were covered in vanilla buttercream and white fondant, with a band of black fondant at the base of each cake. Then I hand piped the scroll pattern with white buttercream and added a pearl finish. I always love the "white on white" theme; it's sophisticated and a classic wedding look. The couple also had a modern looking ceramic cake topper to place on top, but since the reception was being held outside and the weather was warm, I delivered the cake and set it up inside the house where the wedding was being held. The cake topper was added when the cake arrived at its final destination in the backyard. This cake served about 120 guests and looked beautiful on my silver cake stand. I hear it was a big hit with the guests! Congratulations!

Hawaiian Pineapple Cake

If you've been to my house, you know that I love all things tropical, especially pineapples. Pineapples are the international symbol of hospitality, and I love to entertain. Plus, my husband proposed to me in Hawaii, so it has a special place in my heart. But I digress.... I was excited to do a Hawaiian themed cake! So excited that I finally perfected my pineapple cake recipe, which I used in my egg shaped pan and fondant leaves to create the pineapple shaped cake that sits on top of the purple base cake. The base cake was cookies & cream cake with a layer of purple fondant, which I quilted and added fondant flowers and palm trees. Wedding Cake - Jacqui & Brian

I love my job. Seriously. Sure, I'm gaining some lbs and I work weird hours, but it really brings out my creative side and I feel like an artist. Now I admit that this cake was inspired by a picture in a magazine but it reminded the bride of the ruching on her dress, and it was so different and interesting that I couldn't wait to try it.

The cake was 4 tiers (6", 8", 10" and 12"), served 120 + guests and included layers of chocolate chocolate chip cake, vanilla cake with strawberry filling, and red velvet cake with cream cheese filling. I wrapped the tiers of cake with strips of fondant that I cut by hand with a pastry wheel to give it a textured edge. Then I brushed the whole cake with pearlized luster dust which defined the edges and gave it an elegant sheen.

I topped the cake with a bouquet of hand-made sugar flowers. I molded each petal out of gumpaste, and brushed on a little color detail. I made green cymbidium orchids, light pink chrysanthemums, wine colored calla lilies and pink hydrangea blossoms. I also added some of the hydrangea flowers in a few places around the cake, adding some piping detail for interest. The cake turned out even better than I had hoped, and I don't know who was happier - me or the beautiful bride.

Captain Jack Sparrow Pirate Cake

Question: How do I make a cake for a very close friend who's in another state? The short answer is: I can't. BUT, when it's a family friend, and I know that her mom & dad are driving there, then I can send up some supplies and create a "cake collaboration", which is what this one ended up being.

So this 9 year old pink pirate / Captain Jack Sparrow birthday party was the perfect excuse to try another edible portrait. My friend Cindy and I came up with a plan: she would bake the cake, frost it, and cover the top with graham cracker crumbs and raw sugar to resemble the beach. I agreed to make a treasure chest out of rice krispie treats (to better handle 10 hours in the car) and the pink pirate flag. I also made some gold and silver dusted jewels and treasure pieces. The portrait of Captain Jack was a surprise. I got a pack of cocktail napkins with his picture and used the photo as a guide to my painting (the side by side pirates above shows the comparison - the blue background is on the napkin). I painted the portrait with food coloring and a little water and attached sticks so that it would stick out of the cake. Then I packaged everything up with some edible pearls and metallic dragees and sent it up with Grandma and Grandpa with a sketch of how to put the whole thing together.

Funny side note: when Cindy posted the photos on Facebook, it asked her to "tag" Captain Jack - Facebook thought it was a real person! Ha! I was just glad to be able to be part of the birthday. Hope you had a very happy birthday Leah! We love you! But why IS the rum gone???

Toy Story 3 Woody Graduation Cake

This cake was also for a high school graduation with a fun theme: "Kevin goes to College!" As a kid, the graduate was a fan of Woody, and who really wants to grow up?? The base cake was chocolate chocolate chip cake with cream cheese icing. I covered that tier in white fondant and added cow print spots and a yellow rope border. (I figured that with the grad attending UC Davis, he'd better get used to cow print). The top cake was vanilla cake with strawberry filling and I covered it with beige fondant to resemble the moving box with Kevin's college things, topped of course by Sheriff Woody. Woody was hand molded from fondant and the details drawn in with edible markers.

This was cuter in person (sorry for the yucky photos...camera was in use and I had to shoot with the dreaded cell phone camera!)

Shabby Chic Cupcake Tower

In a season where I make a lot of black fondant, I was happy to make something a little different for a high school graduation party. The graduate had a party with a shabby chic theme, so these cupcakes were sweet, girly and pink to match.

The cupcakes were as follows: cookies & cream (with pink jewels), snickerdoodle (with fondant pearls), red velvet (with embossed fondant hearts), chocolate chocolate chip (with pink fondant double flowers), and vanilla (with flowers and silver heart sprinkles).

The mini cake that sat on top of the tower was vanilla cake with strawberry filling. I covered the cake with pink fondant and added a thin bow and a ribbon rose at the bottom (with more fondant pearls). Then I piped on flower and leaf shapes and brushed them to resemble embroidery. It was a fun technique and it made a really pretty centerpiece to the tower and to the party.

Phineas and Ferb Birthday Cake

One of the best parts of being a mom is being able to watch cartoons. And I have to admit that this is my favorite show on the Disney channel. "Phineas and Ferb" is very clever with great music and funny characters. So I was excited to try a cake featuring the main characters. I made a cookies & cream cake and covered it with a layer of light blue fondant. Then I created the characters out of fondant and placed Phineas, Ferb and Candace on the sides of the cake. "Agent P", my favorite semi-aquatic egg-laying mammal of action, got the primo spot on the top of the cake. And then I made the birthday message to look like the logo from the show's title. Finally, I added some fondant circles and mini gold star confetti for some color. I knew it was a hit when the birthday boy (who came to pick up the cake in his Perry the Platypus shirt) saw it and his eyes lit up! It was a fun project. So keep it coming! I'd love to try Dr. Doofenshmirtz next...and maybe an evil cakenator or something. Curse you, Perry the Platypus!

Hello Kitty Face Cake

I feel like the Hello Kitty Cake Studio this month! The challenge of this cake was to make it hot pink and red without making it look too valentine-y. So this is what I came up with. I covered the vanilla cake with strawberry filling with vanilla buttercream and a layer of hot pink fondant. Then I added Hello Kitty's face to the top of the cake. I cut a ribbon of white fondant for the bottom edge of the cake, then added red fondant polka dots and bows that mirrored the one in her hair. The final touch was some black detail with a food marker and the birthday message piped in white buttercream.

El Dorado High School Graduation Cake

This cake was for another cousin of mine (there are many!) on his graduation from El Dorado HS in Placentia. I created the school mascot logo as a focal point of the base cake, then added black and gold details. The top cake tier was shaped into a grad cap and topped with a fondant covered piece of cardboard. The tassel was also made of fondant, and dusted with gold sparkle dust. These twin cakes were the focal point to a beautiful dessert buffet for twin girls turning 3. The cakes (one chocolate, one vanilla with strawberry filling) were covered with lavender fondant and topped with darling ceramic figurines featuring Tinkerbell with a number 3. (Yes, they are ceramic. I'm good, not that good!). Then I embellished the cakes with piped borders and fondant foliage. Addi's cake was decorated with fondant flowers and leaves. Lexi's cake was covered with butterflies and ivy leaves. Then I added flowers and butterflies on wires to add a little height and drama. They were really bright and cute! Tinkerbell Birthday Dessert Buffet

Along with twin Tinkerbell cakes, this dessert buffet was part of a very special birthday party for twin girls turning 3. I just had to post the picture of the whole set up...the hostess did a spectacular job of decorating the dessert table at this park pavillion. I carried her theme of bright purple and lime green into the desserts. There were chocolate and peanut butter parfaits, mini red velvet cupcakes, and mini chocolate cupcake cones. I added tiny decorations (flowers, hearts and butterflies) out of fondant to tie in with the birthday cakes. It was a really fun theme and I had a blast finding my "inner pixie".

Vintage Wedding Cake Trio

Three beautiful cakes for one beautiful wedding! I also got to coordinate the day's events on top of making these three cakes. The wedding was in Old Town San Diego and these cakes really complimented the feel of the whole event. The theme of the day was "vintage" and "rustic", with colors of ivory, khaki and olive green, live olive topiaries for centerpieces, olive branches tucked in the napkins, and lots of candlelight in a historic courtyard at the Cosmopolitan Hotel. [A shout out here to the Cosmopolitan - what a beautiful property in an awesome location - right in the middle of Old Town. The food was good, the rooms were quaint, and the beds super comfortable! I give it a thumbs up.]

OK, back to cake. These cakes were meant to look "vintage" and homemade. So I used classic techniques to decorate in ivory buttercream. The square cake was red velvet with cream cheese filling. I textured the frosting with a spatula to give it some interest, and added buttercream roses and fondant leaves to the top. The round cake in front (top photo) was chocolate chocolate chip cake with vanilla custard filling. I used a combing tool to texture the edges, then added an olive branch to the top, which I molded from fondant and brushed with luster dust. The other round cake was lemon cake with lemon and cream cheese filling. I piped a basket weave pattern to the sides of the cake, and finished with a shell border on bottom and a reverse scroll border on top. Then I made the lemon blossoms and leaves out of fondant and placed them on top. I was really happy with the way they turned out (and super happy that they survived the drive to San Diego!) They looked so beautiful and wedding-y, and the special touch of the cake table was the actual vintage cake topper from the bride's grandparent's wedding cake. West Virginia Cookies

I thought this was a cute idea. A bride ordered these cookies to include in welcome bags for out of town guests at her destination wedding in San Diego. As you may have guessed, many of the family members were from West Virginia, and were big college sports fans. I thought it was a nice gesture and a very personal touch. The sugar cookies were glazed and decorated with royal icing, then placed in individual cellophane bags and tied with little bows.

USMC Birthday Cake

OK, so this was my first military inspired cake. Usually, when I finish a cake, I think "oh, how cute!" But "cute" just didn't seem right. This is definitely the most "manly" design I've done. And it was fun challenge.

What was more fun was doing a cake for John, who I met at a friend's party. He told me how he never liked vanilla cake with strawberry filling (which is what I brought to serve to the party). But he came to shake my hand and tell me that the vanilla cake was the best cake he'd ever had. He said that he was a chocolate fan, and that if he liked the vanilla cake so much, he couldn't wait to taste the chocolate. So his wife surprised him with this little birthday cake.

I started with a chocolate chocolate chip cake with chocolate buttercream filling. Then I combined fondant in greens and browns to create camouflage (I bet you couldn't even see it!) I added some fondant stars that I painted in pewter and gold just to add some interest. Then I created (almost) life-size .50 caliber bullets out of fondant and painted them with metallic luster dusts. For the final touch, I made fondant dog tags and imprinted the birthday message with small rubber stamps. The chain on the dog tags was also fondant (I made that using a string of pearls mold that I use for wedding cakes - just painted the pearls pewter!) I added some "sand" around the base of the cake since our birthday Marine will be deployed to Afghanistan soon. John - hope you enjoyed the chocolate cake even more! (Especially since I wouldn't want to upset someone who deals with ammo that huge!) Happy birthday, and thank you for your service to our country! God bless the Marines.

Cherry Blossom Wedding Cake

This cake turned out to be the perfect finale to the wedding reception. I made a simple, two-tiered square cake and covered it with white fondant. I piped a simple bead border at the base of both tiers. Then, I added a detailed cherry blossom branch all made out of fondant. I formed the branch out of wire and molded brown fondant around the wire. Once I had the branch the way I wanted it, I laid it on the cake and secured it to the cake with a little more wire. I then added delicate white blossoms that I made from fondant and dusted with a pink luster dust. I also created flower buds and little green leaves which I added to the branch. I finished the design by scattering a few additional cherry blossoms around the sides of the cake, just to add a little more color. The result was simple and beautiful, my theme for the whole reception. I loved the way it turned out, almost as much as the guests loved the taste of the cake! The top tier was chocolate chocolate chip cake with a cookies & cream filling. The bottom layer was white cake with strawberry filling. And I displayed the cake on my elegant silver cake stand. Love it!

Cherry Blossom Wedding Centerpieces

I created these simple centerpieces for a small wedding reception in a private backyard. The grooms' sister hosted the event and wanted to incorporate some traditional japanese wedding photos that the bride and groom had taken. So I framed the beautiful photos and set them on the tables next to simple glass cylinder vases. I filled the base of the vases with river rocks and added a couple of tall cherry blossom branches. The branches were dramatic, yet still simple. I bought some branches with pink blossoms and some with white blossoms. Around the frames and cylinders, I placed a couple pink mosaic votive holders with tea light candles. I also used small square glass vases lined with river rock and made small arrangements with large white roses and pink spray roses. For a final touch, I scattered a few river rocks around the vases. I really liked how simple and beautiful everything turned out. I've always wanted to do a cherry blossom theme, and I was so excited when I found out that I could get fresh blossoms. The guests had a great time and the bride was touched. Congratulations!

Wedding Cake Pops

OK, so I resisted the cake pop craze long enough. I saw this idea on the web, and it was just too cute to pass up. Truth be told, I didn't make true "cake" pops. These are what I call my "truffle pops", because I prefer these homemade truffles to the cake pops. (Why would I make a cake and then smash it up into a big mess? Besides, I can't control the ratio of frosting to cake in a cake pop; I prefer 10 to 90, myself. But I digress...)

So my truffle pops come in several different flavors: double chocolate, chocolate mint, chocolate peanut butter, and chocolate chip cookie dough. I made these double chocolate pops by rolling the truffle filling, freezing, then dipping in white and dark chocolate. Then I piped on lacy collars on the white pops and a bow tie on the dark pops. Then I packaged them in pairs with a personalized tag. They made adorable wedding favors and the guests loved them. They'd also be cute without the sticks packaged in little boxes. When it comes to chocolate, I do!

Oak Creek Golf Themed Cupcakes

How do you get a retired father excited about his daughter's cake business? Mention the possibility of trading cupcakes for some rounds of golf! I created these cupcakes for a women's charity event at the beautiful Oak Creek Golf Course in Irvine. There were about 90 women who participated in a golf tournament to support breast cancer research through the Susan G. Komen Foundation. So I was glad to also support a great cause and get my cupcakes in front of a large group of ladies. Besides, how cute are they? I had so much fun creating these designs. I brought an assortment of cupcake flavors for the golfers to try: chocolate chocolate chip, coconut, vanilla with strawberry filling, s'mores, champagne orange and red velvet. I made a different design for each flavor, incorporating golf, breast cancer research, Oak Creek, and even a plumeria flower for my new business name. The chocolate cupcakes were by far the most popular, but I still can't decide if people just like chocolate the best, or if the ladies needing convincing that the golf balls were made of chocolate and not plastic. It was fun to meet the golfers and the staff, and they couldn't have had a more gorgeous day to play. It was an all around great event, and I was happy to be part of it. Thanks Oak Creek! Bridal Shower Mini Purse Cupcake Tower

I am such a geek when it comes to cake stuff. I had bought these cool little sets of purse cutters last summer at the cake convention, and hadn't had the chance to use them yet. So I was SO excited (like really, I need to get out of this kitchen more) when the opportunity came my way. These cupcakes were for a beautiful bridal shower (really gals...the decor was awesome) and they added an element of fun to an elegant event. The cake was vanilla with strawberry filling, covered with cream cheese icing. I piped a scroll pattern all over the cake, added a border of fondant pearls at the bottom with a few bright colored fondant flowers. For the top of the cake, I added a mini bouquet of real hydrangeas in a greenish white color. The matching cupcakes were also vanilla cake with strawberry filling and a dollop of white cream cheese icing. I made all the toppers out of fondant: the little double layer flowers plus all the mini purses. Coordinating with the bride's wedding colors, I cut out each bag from white, black, fuchsia and lime fondant which I textured to resemble fabric patterns. Then I assembled each little purse and decorated with mini fondant flowers, luster dusts and metallic dragees. I even made a little bride and groom purse! These little works of edible art were worth the wait. So adorable. And I just love the presentation of the mini cake on top of my custom stand with the cupcakes below. It was wedding-ish and whimsy all in one.

Hello Kitty Cake and Cupcakes with Keroppi

Hello, Kitty! Yet another order with Hello Kitty, but this time with a flowery theme. The client sent me a picture of a paper plate so that I could match the design. We also decided to throw in some "frog" cupcakes ("Keroppi" for you die-hard fans) for those manly party-goers that would recoil when asked to eat a flowery fondant kitty. I also made some simple flower topped cupcakes for the adults. The cake was vanilla with strawberry filling. The cupcakes were chocolate chocolate chip, s'mores, and a few champagne orange for the grown ups. And I got to see the 2 year old birthday girl grin when she saw her cake. Adorable! What a great job I have.

Toy Story Buzz's Spaceship Cake

I thought that by making this cake with all my son's favorite Toy Story characters would make his birthday extra special. However, during the creation of the cake, all I heard is complaints that Buzz wasn't right next to Woody! There's no reasoning with a 3 year old. But he ended up liking it when all was said and done. Much like my daughter's birthday cake, I started with a hexagon cake (vanilla "funfetti" with BLUE frosting - Jack's request) and topped it with a smaller chocolate cake which I sculpted into the shape of Buzz's rocket. I covered the spaceship with white fondant and created wings and the cockpit window (and BUZZ) with additional fondant and edible markers. I added the hand-painted character panels around the bottom (Woody, Jessie, Rex, Alien, Ham, Mr. Potato Head)

It was fun to do Buzz's space ship this time, and the kids all seemed to like it too. I'm just glad that the birthday party was a big success. Until next year...

Disney Princess Castle Cake

So one of the biggest challenges about having two young kids and creating cakes every week is that said kids decide that they want EVERY character I've ever made on their own birthday cake. My compromise with my daughter Hannah was that she could pick her 6 favorite princesses and I would hand draw each one to put on her birthday cake. I figured by using the hexagon shaped baking pans, it would give me the perfect surface for adding one princess per side panel. Similarly, I made the mini pink castle on top by adding pink fondant panels that I imprinted with my brick texture mat. Then I added windows, shutters, edging, and a the "5" crest. For the top of the cake, I stacked cupcakes and topped them with 3 glittered ice cream cones to create spires. For each princess on the bottom cake, we made a corresponding decoration for the side of the castle: Rapunzel & paintbrush, Aurora & castle, Ariel & shell, Snow White & gemstone, Cinderella & glass slipper, Belle & rose. The cake was strawberry of course (it's PINK!) and Hannah enjoyed sharing it with her friends. I can't believe my sweet girl is already FIVE! Yikes.

Fire Truck Groom's Cake

This little cake was my first official "grooms' cake"! The groom, who was a doctor...(just kidding!) a fireman, got his own mini truck cake, complete with a ladder, lights and vanity plates. I carved the cake shape and covered it with buttercream and red fondant. I added all the details with black, white, and gray fondant, plus a little silver highlighter powder where needed. It was only about 8 inches long, but the perfect accessory to the cupcakes and mini cake (see Wedding Cupcakes - Lauren & Colin). I really liked the idea of a personal size grooms cake. So the bummer about getting wedding cupcakes picked up (instead of delivering) is that I don't get to see the finished product all put together. For this wedding, I made a variety of regular size and mini cupcakes with simple sprinkles and tiny decorations reflecting the wedding colors of white, pale yellow, dark "Tiffany" blue, and shades of brown. The cupcake flavors were chocolate chocolate chip, vanilla, red velvet, carrot, and snickerdoodle. Their mini wedding cake (for cutting) was a chocolate chocolate chip cake with vanilla buttercream, covered in white fondant. I hand painted the scroll design on the side of the cake for a simple, elegant statement. At the wedding, this cake got a topper of fresh flowers in whites and pale yellow. The cake would have topped the 100+ cupcakes on my tiered cupcake tower. I hope it turned out as pretty in person than it did in my mind.

Mickey and Minnie Birthday Cookies

These cookies were for a little girl turning two; she gave these out to her preschool class for a birthday treat. I did these cookies a little differently and piped on black glaze on plain sugar cookies. I used a little white glaze for the eyes, a little red frosting for the mouths, and made fondant bows for Minnie. I even gave one Minnie a white fondant crown for the birthday girl's cookie. Lots of hand piping, but man did they turn out darling. Anything for my favorite mouse.

Ni Hao Kai Lan Birthday Cake #3 (Allanah)

When I first started designing cakes, and someone asked me for a "Ni Hao Kai Lan" cake, I would start by going to Google images and plugging in "Ni Hao Kai Lan cake". Now, I look at just the characters and come up with my own design. But apparently, I'm not alone. For fun, I plugged in "NHKL cake" recently, and can you believe that people have copied MY cake design now?! I guess I've come full circle. It's the sincerest form of flattery, right?

When this client asked for the SAME cake as the one on my blog site, I copied myself! But I have a hard time doing the EXACT cake twice. So to break it up, I made "Mr. Sun" as a topper to the cake, and I added the pagoda on the back. Makes me feel creative. It turned out really cute AGAIN. Such fun characters and colors. And the matching cupcakes were a nice addition.

Hello Kitty Cake and Cookies

It's so funny to me that all the cartoons and characters that I grew up with are all back (Smurfs, Strawberry Shortcake, Transformers, etc.) Some of them never left, as in the case of Hello Kitty! She's been very popular 'round this house too, so much so that I got to try out a new toy and make my own HK cookie cutter! (This has made my fondant work go much quicker.) For this order, I created a 9" round vanilla cake and covered it in pink fondant. I added the Kitty, clouds, stars and the balloons all out of fondant. Then I finished off the bottom of the cake with a big pink bow. Then, I made sugar cookies with matching Kitty faces and pink bows. I just don't get tired of that cute little face (and I'm a dog person...go figure!)

Hawaiian Themed Cupcakes

These adorable cupcakes were for a bridal shower with a Hawaiian theme. The colors were yellow and white, so I came up with 4 designs. I frosted half the 6 dozen red velvet cupcakes in white cream cheese icing and topped them with molded chocolate flip flops or pineapples. The other half I frosted in pale yellow icing and topped with fondant palm trees and plumeria flowers. Makes me want to have a luau! These designs would be fabulous on the "cocomac", coconut, or my soon-to-be-offered pineapple cake! Aloha!

Disney Princess Mini Cakes and Cupcakes

My life is full of frosting and Princesses! I love to be able to work on kids' parties because it's always so fun to do bright and cheery designs. And since my own daughter is a big fan, the Disney Princess theme is one of my favorites. These mini cakes and mini cupcakes were for two ADORABLE twin girls turning 3, each with their own favorite princess. I got to deliver these to the birthday party, and when the first birthday girl smiled and said "Belle!", I knew how to tell the twins apart! I made them each their own princess cake: a 4" round vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream. I added ruffles and roses to the "Belle" cake, and scrolls and gems to the "Snow White" cake. I topped each cake with a fondant medallion with a princess portrait that I hand drew. Then I made a fondant banner to announce the name of each birthday girl. For the other party guests, I made mini cupcakes (red velvet, champagne orange, and vanilla) with coordinating sprinkles and decorations. Everything, as always, was edible. And the party looked like it was going to be a royal good time.

Minnie Mouse Cupcakes and Mini Cake

These cupcakes were based on a design that the client found on the internet. I topped all the cupcakes with a dollop of pink frosting, two mouse ears made out of fondant, and a pink fondant bow to represent Minnie. For the mini cake, I made a 4" vanilla cake and rounded the top layer. Then I added the pink frosting and white fondant polka dots and topped it with a larger version of the ears and bow.

The cupcakes were vanilla, chocolate chocolate chip, red velvet, lemon and carrot. What a fun first birthday theme!

Beachy 40th Birthday Cake - Jim

This cake is the big 4-0 meets Hawaii 5-0. This simple birthday cake was for a rained out beach party. (Who knew!! Weird weather this year.) It was covered in vanilla buttercream tinted brown (with sugar in the raw sprinkled on top for sand) and blue (textured with a spatula to resemble waves). I added a simple border at the bottom and some white chocolate shells. But the most spectacular part of this cake was inside. The cake was my new flavor that I call "Cocomac". It was a coconut cake with macadamia nuts and white chocolate chips, layered with my coconut cream filling. It got rave reviews at the party. If you like those flavors, I highly recommend it. Yum!

Pink and Green Baby Girl Shower Cake

I just love when my friends say "I don't care, just make it pretty!" Thank you ladies, because while I'm having SO much fun making cakes, it's even more fun when I just get to try stuff and do whatever I want! I just love the combination of pink and green, and I am loving the bright lime green for spring, so I thought this would make a cool baby shower cake.

I started with a coconut cake with coconut cream filling (personal fave!), which I covered in vanilla buttercream icing and a thin layer of lime green fondant. I "quilted" the fondant with a wheel tool and added a ribbon of white fondant at the bottom. Then I piped little beads of white icing where the quilt lines crossed. I then got to practice making fondant roses, which I added with leaves and a little sparkle with luster dust.

The final and most striking detail was my pair of pink baby shoes; I made them out of pink fondant and covered them in baby pink edible glitter. They made a sweet topper for the cake and turned out SOOO adorable. I swear my daughter came out of the womb liking pink, sparkle, and SHOES, so what could be more perfect to celebrate baby girls? The girls at the shower just loved the design and didn't want to cut it (I get that a lot) but they were glad they did.

Pea in the Pod Baby Shower Cake

I thought this cake turned out so adorable! The client was looking for a "pea in the pod" design for a baby shower, so I came up with this idea. I created a simple design on the top and bottom tiers of the cake in the client's colors of mint green, darker green and chocolate brown (a pretty unisex palette since the expectant couple wasn't finding out the sex of the baby). I made the baby and pea pod out of fondant for the top of the cake. Then I added some fondant leaves and vines, plus I piped some white sweet pea flowers to add to the baby feel. The cake was vanilla with strawberry filling and cookies and cream cake with chocolate cream filling. Hope everything turned out ok! Congratulations!

Toy Story 3 Cake - Luke

This cake was another design in my on-going study of "Toy Story" themed birthday parties. I topped this square buttercream-covered cake with 9 fondant squares, each with a different character. The characters were all cut out of fondant and the details added with food-safe markers. The cake was banana chocolate chip with chocolate cream filling. It was so funny to see the kids at the party begging for their favorite character. Turns out I should have made 9 squares with Buzz Lightyear! Gotta love preschoolers.
